There have been several workshop engines that have appeared in the Railway Series, television series and the magazines stories.

Percy's Workshop Friends

Many unnamed engines appeared at the Workshop, where Percy used to live before arriving on Sodor.

Biography

When the three big engines went on strike and Thomas left to run his branch line, The Fat Controller was in desperate need of another tank engine. Eventually, he went to a workshop on the Mainland, where they showed him a variety of big and small engines.

Some of these engines were described as looking happy, some sad, and some looked at the Fat Controller anxiously hoping he would choose them. He finally chose a small green saddletank engine, whom he would name Percy. Later on, Percy would mention to Edward, that the engines at the workshop would have to wheesh loudly to make themselves heard.

Technical Details

Basis

In the Railway Series, there are four engines amongst Percy. The first engine is unidentifiable. The second is a large blue tank engine slightly resembling Thomas, except without extended side tanks. The third is a large red engine resembling Gordon with round buffers. The fourth is a green engine resembling Edward.

In the Television Series, there are five workshop engines. These engines are based on a GNR Class A1 Pacific, LB&SCR E2 Class, L&YR Class 28, LMS Stanier Class 5, and FR K2 Class respectively. The engines shown reused the models of Gordon, Thomas, James, Henry and Edward.

In addition to these, two other engines were seen in the My Thomas Story Library book series. The first engine resembles Percy's design, an 0-4-0 Avonside saddletank engine. The second engine is based on a Hunslet Austerity WD 0-6-0ST, which is also the basis of Wilbert, Sixteen and the Austerity Engine. Lastly, in Plarail Thomas Encyclopedia, Donald, a CR Class 812, was used to portray a workshop engine and covered in a tarpaulin.

Livery

In the Railway Series, the livery of the first engine was obscured by Percy, the second engine was painted blue with red lining, the third engine was red with black lining, and the last engine was green with dark green lining. They all had black wheels.

In the Television Series, these engines were painted in North Western Railway (NWR) blue with red lining, green with red lining, and red with gold and black lining.

In the Story Library books, one of these engines was painted maroon, while the other was dark blue with red lining and yellow portholes. The engine featured in the Plarail Thomas Encyclopedia was painted in British Railways (BR) black livery with white and red lining.

Trivia

  • In the Railway Series, these engines are referred to as tank engines. However, the illustrations would suggest some of these are actually tender engines.
  • In the Television Series, the engines shown in the workshop are actually Gordon, The Märklin Engine, James, Henry and Edward, but covered in tarpaulins and with the tenders removed so that the audience would not make out who they were.
  • In Plarail Thomas Encyclopedia, the Motor Road and Rail Donald is protrayed as one of these engines in a scene recreation of Trouble in the Shed.[1]
  • The Austerity Engine bares a strong resemblance to Wilbert with the exception of having dark blue wheels, red lining extending to the top of its cab, yellow portholes, and a rectangular splasher above its rear wheels.
  • The maroon saddletank engine resembles the Bachmann Junior No.31 'Greg' steam locomotive, which is a recolour and retooling of the Bachmann Percy model.

Edward's Workshop Friends

These three engines appeared in the magazines.

Biography

When Edward was sent to the works to be mended, he met these engines. Edward was quick to befriend these engines, due to their friendly nature and positive attitude towards him.

Technical Details

Basis

The first engine is based on a Bulleid 10201 class diesel-electric; all of which had been scrapped by the mid 1960s.

The second engine, which has smoke deflectors, appears to be based on a BR Standard Class 6, albeit with a flat running board.

Finally, the last engine, seen behind Edward, is a steam engine. Its exact basis is unknown, as only it's smokebox, eyes, and boiler are visible. however it appears to have a top feed on it's boiler and heavily represents a tender engine built by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS).

Livery

The diesel-electric engine is painted silver. The first steam engine is painted green with red lining and distinctively has green smoke-deflectors. The last steam engine is painted salmon with black lining.

Appearances

The Blue Overhauled Engine

The Blue Overhauled Engine is a mixed-traffic tender engine.

This engine resembles Henry's new shape, but with different cylinders and blue paint work that is similar to Gordon's.

Biography

This engine was undergoing an overhaul similar to Henry's new design. He was first seen when Henry was being escorted to the Works by Percy. Henry was shocked to learn that the works was full of ill engines.

Technical Details

Basis

This engine is based on a London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Stanier 5MT "Black Five" 4-6-0.
