“Oh, no! Come back, Winston!”
― The Fat Controller

Wayward Winston is a magazine story, it was illustrated by using images from the CGI television series.

Plot

The Fat Controller and Winston are out on track inspection duty. Winston enjoys his trip out, but does not enjoy the Fat Controller's terrible driving. Finally, the Fat Controller stops to talk to some workmen. By now, Winston is feeling very shaken and wishes that he does not need a driver. Then, Winston realises that his handbrake is not on and he starts to roll along by himself. The Fat Controller can only watch as Winston rolls away.

Just then, Thomas passes by. The Fat Controller stops him and orders him to follow Winston and try to stop him before the little track inspection vehicle gets into any trouble. By now, Winston has changed his mind about not wanting a driver as he zooms along, out of control.

Winston races on to Tidmouth and is just about to collide with some trucks when he splutters to a stop; he has run out of fuel, just as Thomas and the Fat Controller arrive. The Fat Controller starts to shout at Winston for going off on his own. Winston apologises, but reminds the Fat Controller that he could not help going off on his own because his handbrake was not applied. The Fat Controller realises his mistake and apologises, too. He then gives both Thomas and Winston the rest of the day off.
