It is a very busy day at the Sodor Steamworks. Percy is waiting to be painted and Edward is waiting to be fixed. Victor races from one engine to another as the Fat Controller arrives in Gordon who is spluttering as he steams. The Fat Controller tells Victor that Gordon's valves are blocked and he needs to be fixed in time to take some children to the docks for a boat trip. Victor is worried; there is no room in the steamworks for Gordon and all the workmen are busy, but Victor doesn't want to say no to the Fat Controller and agrees to take on the job. The Fat Controller is delighted.
Then, Thomas arrives and asks if Victor can fix his loose footplate. Victor knows he has too much work to do as it is, but wants to be really useful so he agrees to help his friend Thomas. Afterwards, Emily arrives and says her buffers need to be polished. Victor doesn't want to turn Emily away so agrees to help her.
Then, there is trouble. As the Fat Controller arrives to collect Gordon, black smoke and soot shoots from Gordon and covers the Fat Controller and his car. The Fat Controller is very angry. Victor is ashamed and explains that he wanted to do everything and ended up doing nothing. Victor asks for a second chance to clean the Fat Controller's car and fix Gordon's valves. The Fat Controller can see Victor is sorry and agrees. Victor springs into action and all of the engines agree to help. The engines don't mind waiting and some even agree to come back the following day. Victor is very happy at the kindness of his friends.
When the Fat Controller returns, Victor tells him that Gordon has been fixed. The Fat Controller tells Victor that he is a really useful engine and that makes Victor very happy indeed.
