Uphill and Down is a rhyming magazine story.
The Thin Controller is on Peter Sam's train which is to travel from Crovan's Gate to Top Station. They have a great journey, travelling uphill and down and meeting engine friends on the way. Once they have reached Top Station, Peter Sam asks if Mr. Percival will be travelling back with them. The Thin Controller says he is not and Peter Sam wonders how he will get home. Mr. Percival goes and fetches his brand new mountain bike and peddles off downhill.
- In the final illustration, Mr. Percival can be coloured in by the reader.
- Crovan's Gate is misspelled as "Crovansgate".
- In the first illustration, Peter Sam is missing a guide bar and a side-rod.
- Peter Sam has his old funnel.
