During the Great Railway Show, he was seen shunting trucks around the yard for the contestants.
Ulli is based on a BR Class 08 diesel-electric shunter. Over seventy members of this class survive today in preservation, while around 100 remain in service on the national rail network. They were in fact the most successful shunting engines in the world, with 996 of them built. Diesel, the Diesel Shunter, Paxton, Sidney, Splatter, Dodge, 'Arry, Bert and The Mainland Diesels are also members of this class.
Ulli is painted in a livery similar to the EWS orange-red and yellow livery. He has a black and yellow hazard stripes painted on his fronts, white ladders, yellow counterweights and red buffers.
- Out of the five Mainland diesels that debuted in The Great Race, Ulli is currently the only one to be named.
- His face appears to be a modified version of Paxton's.
