- "I wasn't scared, I was just being careful."
- ―Thomas talking to Percy
Thomas and the Swans is a 1992 annual story.
A pheasant scares Percy, but Thomas scoffs at him for being frightened by a bird and boasts that he could easily handle birds by blowing steam at them. But his boastfulness does not last long, when he comes face to face with an angry swan with a broken wing. That night, Thomas learns that he was good to be careful not to hurt one of the Queen's own swans.
- It seems likely that this story formed the basis for "Thomas and the Swan", the first story of the Railway Series book, Thomas and his Friends.
- The story Paint Pots and Queens is referenced.
