- “Roads, not railways, are useful. Tear up all your tracks and turn 'em into roads is what I say!”
Thomas' Trick is a magazine story.
A new section of line is being built. The workmen are preparing the ground. One day, whilst stopped at a signal, Thomas meets George the grumpy old steamroller. He tells Thomas that railways should be ripped up and turned into roads. Next day, there is a thick mist, a worker tells Thomas that the ground where they are working is too uneven but George will not help because he is against railways. The thick mist gives Thomas an idea. He tells George to come and flatten a bumpy piece of road, and George, not knowing it is the work site where they are laying new tracks, agrees. Soon the line was open and George is furious when Thomas tells him that he helped to make it!
