- “Your firebox is too small for an engine like you!”
- ―Sir Topham Hatt
The Unlucky Engine is a magazine story.
Donald and Douglas are overworked, so the Fat Controller borrows an engine from the mainland to help. The engine, 13, considers himself to be unlucky, but does his best to help, although his bad luck soon gets the better of him and the twins. The next day, 13 gets stuck under a landslide and is sent to the Works. 13 thinks he is going to be scrapped, but the Fat Controller tells him that he is going to have a bigger firebox fitted. After his repairs, 13's bad luck disappears. At the end of his visit, 13 tells Donald and Douglas he is going home as a very lucky engine.
