---|
The First Red Engine lived at Tidmouth Sheds with Edward, Henry, Gordon, 98462 and 87546, it is unknown what happened to the engine afterwards, although he/she could have returned back to The Other Railway.
Persona
It's implied that the engine, along with the four other engines, liked to bully and tease Edward due to him being smaller and weaker than them.
Basis
The engine's basis is not known, with no outside cylinders or motion. He/she looks a cross between Gordon and Henry in his old shape with a 4-6-0 or 4-6-2 wheel arrangement.
Livery
The engine is painted in a red coat of paint, with yellow and black lining, and has red wheels and a black dome.
Appearances
- The Three Railway Engines (not named)
Trivia
- The character was created by Wilbert Awdry, but was never featured in any other stories for unknown reasons.

The Second Red Engine

---|
The Second Red Engine tried to push Henry out of a tunnel, but without success, it is unknown what happened to the engine following this event.
Persona
The engine seems to be of a helpful persona, as he/she tried to push Henry from the tunnel without any fuss.
Basis
The engine is based on the L&YR Class 25 with an added pony truck and a Fowler tender, very much like James.
Livery
The engine is painted in a bright red coat of paint, with yellow and black lining. He/she has red wheels and a red dome.
Appearances
Railway Series
- The Three Railway Engines (does not speak)
Trivia
- The engine was originally drawn to be James, however, children wrote to Wilbert Awdry asking why James was red before he got painted in the third book. The reverend then decided that the engine was a different character altogether.
- The engine's role in The Sad Story of Henry was replaced by Thomas when the story was adapted into the television series. Ironically, James took his/her role in The Adventure Begins.
