“There's a hole where my face should be!”
― Thomas referring to the cardboard cut-out of himself

Snap Happy is a magazine story.

Plot

Stephen, Bridget and their grandmother, Lady Hatt, are visiting the pier. While they are there, the two children have their photographs taken, standing behind painted shapes of old-fashioned holidaymakers and sticking their faces through holes in the portraits' heads. When they've been snapped by the photographer, Lady Hatt gives him their address so he can send the photos to them when they have been developed. Of all the attractions on the pier, the funny-figure photos are the most popular with all the children.

That evening, when the Fat Controller arrives home from work, his grandchildren tell him all about their trip to the pier. But Sir Topham Hatt has some exciting news of his own - there is to be a Fun Day at the Main Station for the railway's loyal passengers to enjoy. Visitors to the event will be shown around the engine sheds and the Fat Controller's office. There is to be refreshments in the waiting room and souvenirs to take hope. The Fat Controller also shares his plan to hire a photographer to snap pictures of the children with the engines.

The next morning, the postman delivers the funny photographs of Stephen and Bridget. When Sir Topham sees them, he laughs loudly. Then, he has an idea and hurries off to work where he arranges for a cardboard model of Thomas to be painted. When it is finished, Thomas is puzzled and wonders why there is a hole where his face should be.

The day of the event arrives and the Main Station is full of people. Lady Hatt had arranges for the photographer from the pier to take photos of everyone. Stephen and Bridget join the other excited children as they each peer through the hole in Thomas' model. Thomas laughs; now he understands why there is a hole in his model's face. The children are delighted to be able to look like Thomas, but Bridget reminds everyone that there's only one Thomas really.
