Smiles All Round is a magazine story. It was republished in 2012 as Making Annie Smile.
Annie feels unwell so the Fat Controller takes her out of service for a refit. Annie feels very sad and does not want to be on her own. Thomas tries to think of a way to make her better when he sees a signwriter. Thomas asks the signwriter if he can paint people and then tells the Fat Controller his idea. The Fat Controller agrees and the signwriter paints a mural of passengers on the wall for Annie to see. This makes her really happy again.
- In the first illustration, Annie is missing her name.
