Search and Rescue! is a lift-the-flap book.
There has been a big storm on the Island of Sodor. Thomas is delivering supplies and clearing tracks. The sign at the Sodor Search and Rescue Centre got damaged in the storm and Sir Topham Hatt wants Thomas to go to the Docks to pick up a new sign.
At the Docks, Thomas meets Spencer. He says that if Thomas' job is important, a big engine like him would be chosen for the job. Spencer races away from the Docks and chuffs fast around a sharp bend, but the tracks are slippery and he crashes into some rubbish trucks.
The news of Spencer's accident soon spreads. Even though Thomas has a special job to do, he wants to help Spencer. He collects some workmen and goes to the site of the accident. Rocky is ready to help Spencer get to the Sodor Steamworks.
Sir Topham Hatt waits for Thomas and the new sign at the Sodor Search and Rescue Centre. He tells Thomas that doing their jobs are important, but it is also important to help friends when they are in trouble. He calls Thomas a really useful engine and Thomas puffs with pride.
At the end of the busy day, Thomas goes home to Tidmouth Sheds for a well-deserved rest. He is happy to have been really useful and to have so many helpful friends.
- On the first page, Thomas' flatbed is derailed.
- Spencer does not crash into the rubbish trucks.
- When Rocky comes to lift Spencer back onto the tracks, they are in another location. Also, Spencer seems to be on the track where Rocky stands, Spencer is too small, his tender is missing, and he is mirrored.
- When Thomas is at the Sodor Search and Rescue Centre, Annie is derailed.
