N.C.B. is an orange coal truck who is privately owned by the National Coal Board. He lived in Vicarstown, where Thomas worked as a station pilot.
N.C.B. first made a cameo appearance in the Railway Series story, Thomas and the Trucks. He later made another cameo appearance in the Meet Thomas section of the 1979 annual.
N.C.B. is based on the 8-plank open wagon. Fred Pelhay and Old Bennett are also based on this wagon.
In his first appearance, N.C.B. was painted yellow with his name is painted on his sides in white, but in his second appearance, his yellow paintwork became orange and he gained black frameworks.
