Jinty and Pug are two ex-LMS tank engines who once visited the North Western Railway on loan from British Railways. Both are friends of Percy.

Jinty

Jinty is an 0-6-0 tank engine belonging to the Other Railway.

Biography

In 1956, Jinty and Pug - along with five other engines - were loaned by British Railways to run the North Western Railway while Sir Topham Hatt's engines visited the Mainland. Jinty ran Thomas' Branch Line while Thomas was away.

Shorty before the Sodor engines left, Thomas was teaching Jinty how to run the line. He told Jinty about his race with Bertie and attempted to demonstrate how he stopped just short of the buffers to win the race. However, he instead crashed into the buffers and almost missed the trip due to the damage to his front. Jinty helped to pull Thomas out of the wreckage, but still laughed at him.[1]

Personality

Little is known about Jinty's personality. Jinty seems to be friendly and polite, greeting Percy upon arrival and helping Thomas after his accident, however Jinty also appears to have a cheeky side and was seen openly laughing at Thomas after his crash.

When the Sodor engines returned, the passengers were quoted saying "those others did their best, but they don't know our ways. Nothing anywhere can compare to our Fat Controller's Engines".

Technical Details

Basis

Jinty is based on a London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Fowler 3F 0-6-0T. These class of engines were nicknamed Jinty, which comes from Scottish Gaelic. Jinty in particular is from the 1924 and 1925 batches (originally built as numbers 7100-7149, later renumbered 7260-7309 and then finally British Railways 47260-47309), which lacked the cutout in the side tanks.

A total of nine out of the original number of 422 3F 0-6-0 tank engines are preserved by herritage railways. Out of these, two (British Railways numbers 47279 and 47298) are from the same batches as Jinty.

Livery

Jinty is painted in the British Rail (BR) unlined freight black livery. The BR Cycling Lion crest is applied on Jinty's side tanks.[1]

Trivia

  • In The Railway Series book, The Eight Famous Engines, Jinty does not have a face in the second illustration of the story "The Fat Controller's Engines".
  • Jinty's role in the fourth series episode, Thomas and the Special Letter was replaced with Oliver.
  • Despite not appearing in the television series, Jinty was given a television series-esque whistle in the BBC Audio Railway Stories.
    • Jinty's whistle is Percy's whistle approximately 21 semitones lower in pitch.
    • Jinty's whistle was also used in the BBC Audio Railway Stories for Peter Sam.
  • Though Jinty's gender is officially unknown, the name Jinty is predominantly used as a female name, which may make Jinty the first female steam engine in both The Railway Series as well as the franchise as a whole.
  • Various in-real-life Jinty locomotives have been used disguised as Thomas the Tank Engine at various Days Out with Thomas events.
  • In 2008, many UK heritage railways withdrew their Day Out with Thomas events due to HiT Entertainment's revised licensing conditions. An original character called "Jimmy the Jinty" took over events for the East Lancashire Railway in 2009.

Pug

Pug is a small 0-4-0 saddle tank engine belonging to the Other Railway.

Biography

In 1956, Jinty and Pug - along with five other engines - were loaned by British Railways to run the North Western Railway while Sir Topham Hatt's engines visited the Mainland. Before leaving, the Fat Controller's engines showed Pug how to run the railway. When the Sodor engines returned, the passengers were quoted saying "those others did their best, but they don't know our ways!"[1].

Personality

Not much is known about Pug's personality, though - like Jinty - Pug appears to be friendly and polite, having whistled cheerfully to Percy, Thomas and Toby upon arrival.

Technical Details

Basis

Pug is based on an LMS 0F Kitson 0-4-0ST. Pug in particular is one of the five from the original 1932 batch (originally built as numbers 1500-1504, later renumbered 7000-7004 and then finally British Railways 47000-47004), which had longer saddle tanks and shorter bunkers. Following the decline of steam, all ten 0F Kitsons were scrapped.

The name Pug is derived from a common term in Scotland for a small industrial shunting engine, typically an 0-4-0 tank.

Livery

Pug is painted in the British Rail (BR) unlined freight black livery.

    • Pug's whistle sound is Henry's, but two steps lower-pitched. Henry himself incorrectly used the same whistle in Henry's Good Deeds only.
