Jack-in-the-Box is a 1987 annual story.
As James puffs into the big station to collect his passengers, he sees a large wooden crate standing on the platform. No one knows what is inside it. After a delay with a late passenger, James starts in a hurry. When he arrives at the next station, there is no guard in sight. So the men look all around for him and finally look in his van. When they look inside the wooden crate, the guard is inside. He tells everyone that when James started off quickly, he fell into the box and it locked itself, trapping him inside.
