“Thank you, Toby! Your whistle saved the day!”
― Thomas

Toby's New Whistle is a magazine story illustrated using images from the CGI television series. It was later published in the 2011 Holiday Annual.

Plot

Toby is at the Sodor Steamworks to get his bell fixed. Victor does not have a replacement bell, so Toby is fitted with a whistle until his rusty, old bell can be fixed. Then, James arrives and tells Toby that he used to have the same whistle and it is the loudest whistle there is. Toby is not happy to hear this; he does not like loud noises.

Toby puffs slowly away, determined not to use his new whistle. Then, Gordon comes up behind Toby and the old steam tram has to turn onto a siding to let the express through. Unfortunately, Toby finds his line is blocked by cows. Toby still does not want to use his whistle, so he finds some workmen stood in a field. Toby calls out to them, but the workmen cannot hear him.

When Toby returns, the cows still have not gone. Suddenly, Toby hears Thomas approaching and he knows he must warn Thomas about the cows. Toby closes his eyes and blows his whistle loudly. It is so loud that Percy and Emily hear it on the other side of the island. Thomas screeches to a halt when he hears the loud noise. Thomas then thanks Toby and tells him that his whistle has saved the day.

Back at the Steamworks, Toby's bell is finally fixed. Victor tells Toby he can keep the whistle if he wants, but Toby still thinks his trusty old bell is best for him.
