The Runaway Kite, originally titled Thomas and the Runaway Kite, is a book in the Thomas Story Time series illustrated using photographs from the CGI television series.

Plot

It is a windy day on Sodor, perfect weather for the Kite Festival. All of the engines are excited, but Thomas is most excited of all. At the docks, workmen puts a trophy in a crate. The Fat Controller says that Lady Hatt will present the trophy to the Kite Festival winner at tea time.

At Gordon's Hill, Thomas spots a beautiful kite, belonging to Stephen and Bridget Hatt. Suddenly, a gust of wind blows the kite out of their hands. Thomas promises that he will get it back to them, but forgets that he should deliver the trophy to Knapford. Charlie offers to help look for the kite, but Thomas says that he is the fastest engine, so he can do it himself. Later, he meets Edward, Percy, and Emily, who also want to help, but Thomas does not want their help either.

As Thomas carries on, he starts to shudder and judder and runs out of coal. Thomas is very sad. Edward, Percy, Emily, and Charlie agree to help Thomas. Charlie's fireman gives Thomas coal, so he can deliver the trophy to Knapford. And the other engines hunt for the kite.

At Knapford, Thomas meets Stephen and Bridget. They join in the hunt and board Thomas. As the engines meet up, the kite swoops down and gets stuck on a signal. Later, at the Kite Festival, the sky is filled with kites. All of them look beautiful, but Thomas is sure that Stephen and Bridget will win the trophy.
