The Cranky Day is a book published by Random House in 2000. It features three stories based on episodes from the fifth series. Its cover changed in 2008 and comes with a CD or audio cassette.

  • This is the first Thomas audio book to include a Ding sound to turn the page.
  • An audio cassette or CD was included with some copies of the book, featuring narrations by Alec Baldwin taken directly from the episode's US audio, despite the dialogue not matching the text in some places.
  • The audio to The Britt Allcroft Company opening theme was used when the start of the Lady Hatt's Birthday Party.
  • A truck with S.C. Ruffey's face is seen in Put Upon Percy.
  • The 2000 cover features a photo from Thomas and Stepney. The alternative cover also shows a photo from Horrid Lorry. The alternative cover also has the book titled Cranky Bugs and Other Thomas Stories instead.

Goofs

  • In Cranky Bugs, "aground" is misspelled is "around".
  • James' lines of dialogue are not indented after Gordon's in Cranky Bugs and the words "said James" are missing after James says, "You should see the situation from Cranky's point of view", thus making it look as if Gordon is still speaking.
