Sir Topham Hatt uses his car to go to places when the engines are busy or to see what the engines are doing. Over the years, he has been seen driving many different cars. Although Sir Topham Hatt still uses his car frequently, he often uses Winston whenever he has to accompany his engines in locations beyond the road where his car cannot reach.

The Original Blue Car

Sir Topham Hatt used this car to go to the sheds when the engines were on strike.

This car was never seen moving and was always used as set dressing.

Historical Note: The Fat Controller, Sir Topham Hatt's car is loosely based on saloon cars made in the 1950s.

Trivia

  • There were two different models of this car. The model used in the first series depicted a four-door V12 with six side windows, and had transparent glazing. The model used from the second to fourth series depicted a two-door V12 with only four side windows, and had a lower level of detailing overall (there were no panel lines, and the radiator, headlights, hubcaps, and glazing were merely silver paint).
  • The ERTL model of this car was based on a 1936 Ford Coupe; it was also a repaint of the black 1936 Ford Coupe from their Dick Tracy vehicles range.

The Current Blue Car

Around the time Sir Topham Hatt went on holiday with his family, he bought a new blue car. It once had a flat tyre when he drove it into a pothole, but he still thinks it is very reliable and would not want to get to work in any other vehicle.

  • The car resembles the appearance of Sir Topham Hatt's car in The Railway Series.
    • The car had six side windows in The Railway Series, but in the Thomas & Friends, it has four side windows.
  • The car was seen moving on-screen for the first time in the fifth series episode, Cranky Bugs. This allowed it to play roles in later episodes such as Lady Hatt's Birthday Party, while the previous one was only used as a background element.
  • The car's first model is currently owned by ThomasTankMerch as of 2022 and makes an appearance in the fan-made episode The Good Old Days by FlyingPringle.
  • The car's second model used to be on display in Canada at Nitrogen Studios. It then when to be on display at the Clearwater Exhibition on 23rd October 2021.
  • The car's Wooden Railway, Take Along and Take-n-Play toys are convertibles to have Sir Topham Hatt inside the car.
  • The car's horn sound used in the sixth-seventh series is the same as Bulgy's main and it was reused for him. It was also reused for one of the cars in The Runaway Elephant.

  • The rear end of the car sort of resembles a Chevrolet Fleetline Sportmaster.
  • The car's horn from the sixth to seventh series and Bulgy's main sounds similar to Alfie's horn sound.
  • The car's horn in the Storytime podcast series was used as Cleo's horn sound.
