“This will be the best birthday party ever!”
― Sally

Happy Ending, republished as Clowning Around in 2011, is a magazine story.

Plot

A circus has arrived on Sodor and Thomas is taking excited children, including Bridget and Stephen, to the show. The circus is a huge success, but Thomas notices that the children are sad afterwards; the circus is leaving soon. The next day, Stephen and Bridget are heading to a children's party. Thomas has not brought the children far when he has to stop for a car that has broken down on a level crossing. Thomas' crew help to push the car aside, but the man is worried; he has an urgent appointment to get to. Thomas and his crew agree to take him.

At the next station Stephen and Bridget are met by their friend, Sally. She tells Stephen and Bridget that her mother has booked a clown who has not arrived. Then the man whose car had broken down steps onto the platform. He looks very different now - he is Smiley the Clown.
