When Season 9 premiered in the US on PBS Kids, a big change occurred when Rusty was referred to as being a female character. Rusty, believe it or not, was never referred to in gender specific terms before in either the UK or US - notice all of his lines the narrator never ended with "he said", it was always ended with "said Rusty". Rusty was firmly established already as being male by both the Railway Series and product lines.
Presumably because of the backlash from old fans of the show, Michael Brandon's narration was altered for DVD release, once again referring to Rusty as a male. The only evidence of this original mishap is the fact that Michael Brandon uses a softer voice for Rusty in Season 9 than the gruff one he used previously in Season 7 and further in Seasons 10 and 11.
Sorry for the bad audio quality, the original video was transferred in like 2,006. Thanks to CraneProductions27 for the audio
