“Thanks, Diesel! Now we'll make a fast, clean getaway!”
― the steam engines

Clean Getaway! is a magazine story.

Plot

Diesel is enjoying himself immensely; the steam engines are not running properly due to a batch of bad coal. Diesel laughs at Gordon and Percy as they cough and splutter amid clouds of thick, dirty, black smoke.

The engine drivers complain to the Fat Controller about the coal and, worried the engines will fall behind schedule, leaps into action. Meanwhile, Thomas is unable to get up a slope on the line with a goods train on his branch line. Diesel is sent to help and the devious engine takes great pleasure in pulling Thomas and his train back to the Main Station.

Then, the Fat Controller hurries from his office to talk to Diesel. He tells Diesel he needs him to collect a special shipment from the Big Harbour. Diesel, with the steam engines listening sulkily nearby, brags loudly and asks what sort of shipment. The Fat Controller tells him that it is fresh coal for the steam engines, of course. The other engines laugh and when Diesel returns with the shipment, they laugh even louder. Diesel is covered in coal dust. While he is being cleaned, the steam engines puff away with their new coal - making a fast, clean getaway.
