Chiff Chaff is a magazine story.
Plot[]
Edward is struggling up Gordon's Hill with some empty trucks. He starts making funny "CHIFF CHAFF" noises, which Thomas remarks on as he passes by. Edward's driver agrees when they reach The Goods Yard, saying that if the trucks were full they would have never made it.
Diesel teases Edward for the noises he is making as they shunt in The Yard. The Fat Controller hears the noises and scolds Diesel for saying Edward should be scrapped. The Fat Controller sends Edward to the works on the Mainland to be mended by the railway doctors. At the works, Edward is tested and is revealed to need new pistons and a full overhaul. He meets a lot of new engines there.
Thomas misses Edward and worries about him, but cheers up when Edward comes home smiling and feeling like a new engine. Edward proudly takes a heavy train of oil trucks up Gordon's Hill. The Fat Controller says he should never fear the railway doctors, as "they have changed Edward from an old chiff chaff to the best chuff chuff we have."
