There are many Canal Boats in Sodor's waterways. They are a popular tourist attraction, going up and down rivers and canals.

Sodor Valley

Sodor Valley is a widebeam canal boat which resides at Dryaw Canal Runby.

Livery

Sodor Valley is painted red with green borders and yellow lining. Her hull is painted black with a white stripe and a red triangle underneath her rudder. Her name (Sodor Valley) is painted on her sides and hull in white. Her exhaust pipe is painted black with three red rings around the top.

Lady Claire

Lady Claire is a narrowboat which transports goods and materials. She resides at Brendam Docks.

Lady Claire is painted green with a black hull. Her cabin sides are decorated with red borders and yellow lining, while her name is painted in white on her hull. Her company's name is also painted on the sides of her cabin in white. Her exhaust pipe is painted black with two gold bands around the top.

Samuel James Ltd Cartage No. 181089 is a narrowboat which transports goods and materials.

Samuel James Ltd Cartage No. 181089 is painted black with yellow lining and red panels. It has a white stripe around the top of its hull. Its company name (Samuel James Ltd Cartage) and number (No. 181089) are painted on the sides of its cabin in white. Its exhaust pipe is painted black with two gold bands around the top.

Sodor Maid

Sodor Maid is a popular widebeam canal boat which resides at Dryaw Canal, however she has also been seen at Brendam Canal. The Fat Controller and his family once took Sodor Maid out when they were on holiday, however ended up stuck on a mudbank, where other narrowboats were unable to free them. They were eventually rescued by Percy with the Breakdown Train and taken to Tidmouth Hault. [2]

Sodor Maid is painted green and red with yellow lining. She has a black hull with a large white stripe around the top and two smaller green and red stripes beneath. Her name (Sodor Maid) is painted on her sides in white with floral decorations. Her exhaust pipe is painted black with red and yellow bands.

  • Sometime between the fifth and eighth series, Sodor Maid's model was completely rebuilt, likely due to damage sustained while being shipped to Canada for the filming of Thomas and the Magic Railroad. Changes to the model include:
    • She becomes taller and narrower.
    • The curves on her side body panels become much sharper and higher up.
    • The rectangular sections on her side are now all equal in length. Additionally, her name is now written on the front rectangles as well as the back rectangles.
    • The pattern on her front end is changed to match the pattern on her back end.
    • The white stripe around her hull becomes much thicker.
    • The portholes and entrance on her sides are removed.
    • The detailing on her roof is removed.

Heart of Sodor

Heart of Sodor is another widebeam canal boat which resides at the Dryaw canal runby. She once tried to rescue Sodor Maid from a mudbank, but to no avail.

Heart of Sodor is painted light blue with dark blue panels and white lining. Her roof is painted dark blue with red lining. She has a black hull with a thick white stripe around the top. The word "Sodor" is painted on her hull at the rudder end in white with red backing. Her exhaust pipe is painted black with one red band at the top and one blue band beneath.

River Rose

River Rose is a canal boat which is hauled up and down rivers by a horse named Sam. One day, Edward took the horse's place after he lost a horseshoe.

In her first appearance, River Rose is painted white with a black hull, red trim, a blue roof and yellow decoration. She has a yellow rudder with a red stripe. Her name is written on her hull in black.

In Little and Light, she is painted green with a red hull, black roof and yellow decoration. Her name is written on her hull in white.

Other Canal Boats

Several other canal boats have been seen in blue and green colours. The Wharf has four canal boats which are numbered as Reg. of Sodor Nos. 1-4.

A canal boat with the name "Alice Marie" briefly appeared in the 2003 magazine story Surprise, Surprise!. In another magazine story, a yellow canal boat owned by W. Arkwright is seen.

A water ride at Thomas Land in Japan called "The Exciting Cruise" makes use of the various widebeam Sodor Canal Boats with names such as "Tidmouth Maid", "Princess Dandelion", "Sodor Queen" and "Bluebell Valley". A widebeam canal boat resembling Princess Dandelion appears in the 1993 book Wave Hello to Thomas!.

Sentient canal boats have also been featured in the magazines. A dark green canal boat with a face appeared in the story Too Hot to Work!. Two canal barges with a face also appeared in the magazines.
