Big Belle is a magazine story illustrated using images from the television series.

Belle is new to the Island and wants to make lots of friends. Belle especially wants to befriend Toby when she hears he has a bell just like her. Thomas tells her that Toby lives at Arlesdale End, so that is where she goes. Toby is rather scared of Belle and tells her he would rather stay in his shed than race up Gordon's Hill. When she does so, the elderly tram engine hides in a siding and tells Belle that he is too old to go racing and they head to the farm. Toby enjoys the farm, but gets scared when Belle shoots water into the pigs' earth patch. Belle then suggests they go to Maithwaite, but once there Belle rings her bell so loudly it scares both Toby and the passengers. Toby races away leaving Belle alone at the station. Belle is very sad and heads back to Arlesdale End to see if Toby will talk to her.

There, Belle listens to the birds with Toby who decides the new engine is not scary after all. The pair then head back to the farm and then to Maithwaite where the pair ring their bells gently. Toby then introduces his new friend to the passengers, a very happy Belle.
